WHAT IS YASMIN (DROSPIRENIONE 3MG & ETHINYLESTRADIOL 0.03MG) FOR?

Yasmin is a contraceptive pill. Like other hormone-based contraceptives, Yasmin provides effective protection while allowing spontaneous sex. Yasmin contains two different hormones, estrogen, and progesterone, and is therefore referred to as a combined oral contraceptive. Ethinyl estradiol and Drospirenone also sold under the brand name Yaz is a birth control pill. It works by preventing ovulation or the release of a female egg from the ovaries. It also causes changes in the cervical and uterine lining making the cervical mucus more viscous thereby making it harder for male sperms to reach the uterus and also for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus wall. This pill is used as a contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy. It is also used in treating moderate acne in women who are above 14 years of age and have started getting their periods, and who also wish to use contraception to avoid pregnancy. Ethinyl estradiol/Drospirenone is also used for alleviating the symptoms of a premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), such as depression, anxiety, irritability, concentration troubles, lethargy, changes in sleep patterns or appetite, muscle or joint pain, tender breasts, and weight gain. This pill may also be given for treatments besides those listed above.

HOW SAFE IS CONTRACEPTION WITH YASMIN (DROSPIRENIONE 3MG & ETHINYLESTRADIOL 0.03MG)?

Very safe – but only if the tablets are taken correctly. In order to benefit from Yasmin, it is important to follow the instructions in the patient leaflet carefully, taking one pill at the same time every day. When used correctly, oral contraception is a very safe method, preventing over 99% of all possible pregnancies. Ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone are not recommended if you are pregnant or if you have recently delivered a baby. You must also not take this pill if you are suffering from any of these conditions: heart disease, out of control high blood pressure, blood clotting disorder, problems with circulation, problems in eyes or kidneys due to diabetes, unexplained vaginal bleeding, liver disease, or liver cancer, migraine, if you are a smoker and above 35, breast or uterine cancer, jaundice due to birth control pills, or a heart attack or a stroke in the recent past. You may need to employ an alternate birth control method such as condoms or spermicide in the initial few days of starting with the pills or if you happen to miss a dose. Consult your doctor for more details. Always store Ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone pills in a cool and dry place away from heat, light, moisture, children, and pets.

DO I NEED TO USE A CONDOM IN ADDITION FOR YASMIN (DROSPIRENIONE 3MG & ETHINYLESTRADIOL 0.03MG) ?

If you are taking Yasmin correctly, you do not need to worry about using an additional contraceptive for preventing pregnancy. However, Yasmin provides no protection from sexually transmitted diseases. If you have sex with partners whose sexual health status is unknown, you should always use a condom to prevent contracting gonorrhea, herpes, human papillomavirus or HIV. Also, if you have forgotten to take a pill or are currently taking medication that interacts with your pill (for example some antibiotics) you may also need to use a condom in addition to taking your daily tablet.

WHY IS YASMIN (DROSPIRENIONE 3MG & ETHINYLESTRADIOL 0.03MG) A SAFE CONTRACEPTIVE?

Like other combined contraceptive pills, Yasmin is highly effective in preventing pregnancy, as it works in three ways. Firstly, the hormones in Yasmin cause the mucus at the entrance of the womb to thicken, which means that sperm will not be able to make their way to the egg. Should this mechanism fail, you are still protected from pregnancy as Yasmin also suppresses ovulation. Finally, taking a contraceptive pill causes changes in the texture of the walls inside the womb. Even if the first two mechanisms fail, a fertilized egg will not be able to implant in the womb and develop.

DOES YASMIN (DROSPIRENIONE 3MG & ETHINYLESTRADIOL 0.03MG) INCREASE THE RISK OF THROMBOSIS?

Yasmin and all other combined contraceptives are associated with an increased risk of thrombosis. Whether pills containing drospirenone (the progesterone in Yasmin) lead to a higher increase in this risk than contraceptives containing different progesterone is currently unclear. While a study published in the British Medical Journal seemed to confirm this hypothesis, German scientists from the Endokrinologikum in Hamburg have criticized the methodology of the original study and claim that the results are “statistically irrelevant”.

WHO HAS AN INCREASED RISK OF THROMBOSIS FOR YASMIN (DROSPIRENIONE 3MG & ETHINYLESTRADIOL 0.03MG)?

The risk of thrombosis rises with age and unhealthy habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol. Especially overweight men and women are at a higher risk, as are patients with a family history of blood clots or arteriosclerosis. If any of the above apply to you, a contraceptive pill like Yasmin may not be suitable for you. Your doctor will be able to help you decide whether you can safely take Yasmin, please make sure you provide your GP with all relevant information on your family history and previous health problems.

CAN I TAKE YASMIN (DROSPIRENIONE 3MG & ETHINYLESTRADIOL 0.03MG) WHILE I AM BREASTFEEDING?

No. Combined oral contraceptives like Yasmin are not suitable for women who are breastfeeding. If you would like to use an oral contraceptive while breastfeeding, you should discuss the possibility of taking a progesterone-only pill, also known as the minipill, with your doctor or gynecologist. Due to the lower dose of hormones they contain, some minipills can safely be taken by breastfeeding women.

YASMIN DOSAGE INFORMATION

HOW IS YASMIN TAKEN?

Yasmin needs to be taken at the same time every day in order for it to work effectively. If you are taking Yasmin for the first time, you can decide which time you would like to take your pill and use the same time from then. The tablet must be swallowed with a glass of water. The days of the week are printed on the side of the blister pack, which helps you keep track of which pill to take.

WHY ARE THERE 21 TABLETS IN A PACK?

There is a one-week break after 3 weeks of taking the pill. During this week-long period, you are still protected from pregnancy and you will usually experience light and less painful period. After the week is over, you need to start taking the tablets again.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I FORGET TO TAKE MY PILL?

If you forget to take Yasmin until over 12 hours after the correct time, it is advised that you use protection during the 7 days that follow. Whether this is necessary depends on your menstrual cycle. The patient leaflet provided with your medication includes detailed instructions on what to do in this case. If you forget to take Yasmin in the third week, you should skip your break and start the next blister pack straight away.

WHAT IF I TAKE MORE THAN I SHOULD?

Yasmin has not been reported to cause serious harm as the result of an accidental overdose. However, you might experience nausea or vomiting while young girls might experience unusual bleeding. If you have taken more Yasmin than you should, consult a pharmacist or doctor.

BEFORE TAKING ETHINYL ESTRADIOL AND DROSPIRENONE (YASMIN)

Before taking this pill, let your doctor know about all your medical history and if you are allergic to any medications or any ingredients in ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone. HOW DO I TAKE ETHINYL ESTRADIOL AND DROSPIRENONE (YASMIN)?

Strictly follow the directions of your doctor while taking Ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone. Any departure from the amount of prescribed dosage can cause harmful health effects and render the medication ineffective. Start with the first pill on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday after that. You may need an alternate birth control measure for the initial days of using these pills. You may use condoms or spermicide as backup contraception. You may need frequent doctor visits while taking these pills. Take one pill every day orally and ensure that you don’t go more than 24 hours without a pill. Make a habit to take the pill at the same time every day. When the pills get over, start a new pack. Get a refill before the previous pack gets over as missing on a single dose can result in pregnancy. You may get breakthrough bleeding during the first 3 months of starting this medication. See your doctor if it is persistent and turns heavy. Stop taking the pills if you experience severe vomiting and diarrhea and employ back up birth control method. If you are scheduled for a surgery or any medical test or advised bed rest, you may need to discontinue this pill for some time. Any healthcare provider who treats you must know if you take the pills.

WHAT IF I MISS A DOSE FOR YASMIN (DROSPIRENIONE 3MG & ETHINYLESTRADIOL 0.03MG)?

Missing even a single pill increases the risk of your pregnancy. So don’t skip a dose as far as possible. If you happen to skip one active Ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone pill, take two on the day that you remember. Then have one pill each day for the rest of the pack. If you happen to skip two active pills consecutively in the first and second week, have two pills each day for two consecutive days. Then have one pill each day for the rest of the pack. Adopt backup contraception for at least one full week following the missed doses. If you happen to skip two active pills consecutively in the third week, discard the rest of the pills and start a new pack the same day if you are a Day 1 starter. If you start on Sunday, continue taking a pill every day until Sunday. On Sunday, discard the rest of the pack and open a new pack that day. If you happen to skip three active pills consecutively in week 1, 2, or 3, discard the rest of the pack and open a new pack on the same day if you are a Day 1 starter. If you start on Sunday, continue taking a pill every day until Sunday. On Sunday, discard away the rest of the pack and start a new pack that day.
